Thursday preconference


Rural Library Sustainability:  
Directors and staff in rural public libraries will want to join this workshop offered in conjunction with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, OCLC WebJunction, and the Colorado State Library. The session will address the challenges of creating sustainable public library technologies and examine many topics relevent to rural library service.  Success stories and practical activities will help each participant develop a plan to meet your unique needs.  Attendees will come away with a toolkit for going from planning to success and help lay the groundwork for ongoing assistance for rural libraries in Colorado.

PLA Policies for Results:   Need to develop policies that reflect and support your library's priorities?  Is there a difference between what a policy says and what you actually do?  Learn the he four elements of a library policy, how to recognize the differences between policies and practices, and why it is important to keep your policies complete and current.

Summer Reading Program 2007:  The Colorado Statewide Summer Reading Program for 2007 is "Get a Clue @ Your Library!" featuring mysteries, detectives, super summer sleuthing and puzzles, codes, ciphers for all ages.  Mark Teague will illustrate the children's theme and Russell Walks is illustrating the Teen theme:  "YNK - You Never Know."  Come and share plans, ideas, and possibilities with your fellow youth services librarians!

Colorado Government Information - Not As Boring As You Think!:  What do all these questions have in common: How do I start a small business? Where can I find a list of cattle brands? How do I become a notary public? Answer: They are all found in Colorado government publications!    This session will help you navigate the state government maze to answer those tough patron questions! The Colorado State Publications Library (CoSPL) web pages with online catalog, resource guides, search tips, etc. will be featured. Come and practice searching skills at this interactive workshop.

"Who's knocking at your door?"  Open your doors to help immigrants prepare for U.S. Citizenship.  Citizenship Preparation Classes for Libraries---2 hour session- 2 back to back sessions.  Tap into this group of new library users, perform a public service, attract volunteers, and gain visibility in the community.  Practical ways for a library to start and maintain a Citizenship Preparation program and the kinds of materials and resources available, both free and low cost, to help volunteer instructors.  We will talk about all volunteer programs, grant sponsored programs, and combinations.  Sponsored by the Special Populations & Issues Committee

2 - 3 p.m.
Getting to Know the State Library of Colorado:  You've heard of the State Library of Colorado. You've probably seen emails, brochures, attended workshops, or called for assistance. But do you really KNOW who the staff and what they do? This session will let you know more about the CSL staff both new and familiar, the responsibilities and activities of the various units, and what new plans are on the horizon. It will also give you a chance to put a face to a name and find out what's in store for the future of statewide library services. Come with questions--and a bag to collect the many available handouts.

Do you read, lea, lesen, читаете? Foreign language collections for libraries.  How to start and maintain a foreign language collection in a public library, including access and cataloging issues from a staff and public viewpoint.  We will give a brief history of the Glendale foreign language collections and their use, as well as exploring the joys and pitfalls in providing foreign language collections.
