University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center

Director Health Sciences Center Library

“Library @ Fitzsimons”

The University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center (UCDHSC) is seeking candidates for the Director of the Health Sciences Library.  The Health Sciences Library along with the entirety of the Health Sciences Center campus (HSC) is relocating to the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora. The HSC Library @ Fitzsimons will be the physical and digital hub of knowledge on the Fitzsimons campus, coordinating access to information in support of learning, research, clinical care, and service to the community.  In addition to HSC personnel, the library will serve rural and metro health providers, citizens of the region, and Colorado’s developing biotechnology industry.

The director is responsible for planning and implementing all library and information management programs and services offered by the library, including acquisition and/or licensing of information resources for the HSC campus.  This position appoints and directs faculty and staff and allocates library resources in support of campus and library mission and goals.  The director also holds non-tenure track faculty rank at a level commensurate with the criteria for promotion and appointments of HSC library faculty.  The director will also use the title “Health Sciences Librarian” as appropriate.

The Director of Health Sciences Library reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.  Although the Downtown Denver campus of UCDHSC maintains its own separate library, the Auraria Library, it is expected that the Director of the Health Sciences Library will work closely and collaboratively with the Director, faculty and staff of that library.

Job Responsibilities

The director must have extensive knowledge of library operations in the health sciences environment. The director prepares, allocates and monitors the library budget and is responsible for all library personnel.  The director develops and implements library, information management and technology policy and is responsible for project and strategic planning.  The director has knowledge of innovative and emerging information technologies.  The director collaborates with other CU libraries to provide services and resources to the university community and represents the library and Health Science Center in selected associations, partnerships and networks.

Required Qualifications

A masters degree is required, preferably in library/information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.  Professional experience in an academic health sciences library is required, of which at least three years includes supervisory, planning and budget experience at the assistant or associate director level with responsibility for the operation of multiple departments.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with skill and experience.  UCDHSC offers a full benefits package.  Information on university benefits programs is located at www.cusys.edu/pbs.

Application Deadline

Applications will be accepted electronically beginning November 29, 2006.  Review of applications will begin on December 15, 2006, and continue until the position is filled.

To Apply

Applicants should provide a resume, five references, and a detailed cover letter (no longer than 2 pages) summarizing qualifications, evidence of leadership ability, constituent relations, knowledge of information technologies and their vision for the Library @ Fitzsimons.
