Description:
The Colorado Alliance is considering the collective
purchase of a high performance microfiche scanner( MACH VI-VII) to digitize and
create wider accessibility of microfiche held by Alliance libraries. The
impetus behind this purchase is to support electronic delivery of a huge body
of government publications at UC-Boulder that are only available in microfiche
(estimated at a count of more than 5 million) including federal, state and
international documents. However, the scanner would not be limited to the
Gov Doc collection, it could be used to support digitization and delivery of
microfiche materials from an Alliance member library. Microfiche readers
and duplicators are becoming a rarity so a new fiche scanner would provide the
ability to continue to access and deliver these valuable materials.
Some points of discussion for this round table include:
·
Copy and storage of the microfiche
·
If purchased, where to house the Microfiche
scanner
·
Policies regarding use of the scanner
·
How this would affect the withdrawal process for
government documents
·
Policies and procedures for lending microfiche
·
Other potential uses of the microfiche scanner
