Kevin Smith from Duke University is among the featured presenters at this year’s 42nd Annual Interlibrary Loan Conference in Fort Collins, Colorado on April 28 and 29. Smith’s talk, titled “Tempests on the Copyright Horizon: Insights from a Wonk among Geeks” will explore how the fast pace of new technologies is forcing the reinterpretation of decades-old copyright rules and licensing standards. The surging electronic books market and mass digitization are two key areas where librarians are striving to reconcile existing models of service with new means of delivery. Smith will explore what this means for libraries and their approaches to new technologies and interlibrary loan.

Smith, who holds degrees in both library science and law, is the Scholarly Communications Director at Duke, where his principal role is to teach and advise faculty, administrators, and students about copyright, intellectual property licensing and scholarly publishing. As author of a number of articles on copyright issues, Smith also maintains a highly regarded web log on scholarly communications at http://library.duke.edu/blogs/scholcomm/ that discusses copyright and publication in academia. He is a frequent speaker on these topics.
