Colleagues, a friend at NISO asked me to share this with Colorado librarians.

Privacy Implications of Research Data
http://www.niso.org/news/events/2016/september_joint/

Sunday, September 11, 2016
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., MT
Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver, CO

In conjunction with the International Data Week event being held in Denver, CO, this NISO meeting will be offered both as an on-site event as well as a virtual (streaming) event. There is no cost to the attendee, regardless of the selected option!

NISO (National Information Standards Organization) and The Research Data Alliance (RDA) have formed a joint working group with the intent of addressing a major challenge regarding the advancement of scientific data sharing: privacy and security. In particular, the sharing of human-subject data is hampered by lack of any framework that adequately factors in and addresses those concerns. The RDA-NISO Joint Working Group is taking on the challenge of creating a global consensus framework that can address the various privacy and security concerns.

With that objective in mind, attendees will hear from experts on the following:

· The feasibility of balancing research requirements with the need for privacy protections
· The limits of anonymization in the context of personally identifiable information
· The demands of security, privacy, and trust
· Privacy, policy, and data governance in university research practice
· Privacy and legal frameworks in the European Union

And more...

Confirmed speakers include John Wilbanks, Sage Bionetworks; Micah Altman, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Christine Borgman, University of California-Los Angeles; Christoph Bruch, Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres; Paul Burton, Professor of Infrastructural Epidemiology, University of Bristol, England, with other names to be released soon!
